Here's a trick I learned from an employee at the lfs. Suction cyno with a small diameter tube instead of trying to get it up with the regular syphon. It comes up much easier and you don't drain half the tank in the process. I also have five sand shifting stars and a couple of sand eating cucumbers in the tank now, so the sand is much cleaner.

Glad to hear the problem is getting better. What other steps have you taken ? Cyana culprits are generally, old lights, nutrients or CO2.

You can also siphon the cyano into a filter sock over your sump if you are not prepared to do a water change. Generally people battling this issue will siphon the water to waste as a water change. But you can return it directly to the sump using a sock.

I've put some CO2 filter media in the sump and reduced the lighting cycle by a couple of hours in addition to the new sand shifters. I've also cut down on feeding a bit. I think all of that together has been helping.
