    Hey all,

My gf is uber sensitive to the low vibration that my HOB Remora makes at night. The tank is located opposite our bedroom wall, so the skimmer isn't touching the wall but seems that the vibration goes through to the floor and that wall.

I was wondering if anyone had advice to dampen the vibration? I was thinking of getting foam strips to put under where the lip rests on the tank & also where the leveling screws are.

Any help or advice would be most appreciated.

    Thanks!

Mine does that too....my current stand acts like a drum and i found that opening the door slightly made some of the sound disappear.

Your ideas about the dampening strips sounds good to me - worth a try so long as the materials you use are reef safe in the event of contact with your tank water :)

    good luck~!

Thanks for the suggestion on opening the door, never even thought of that! It's annoying because sometimes it's not a problem but then other nights she can't sleep at all and that makes us both :(. I'm going to hit home depot and check out what they may have also.

How is your pump attached to the skimmer?

My Remora Aqua C has a compartment to improve surface skimming in the water and the box was held to the suspended-in-water pump with screw pressure. A friend adapted the box's attachment: drilled three small holes and uses three suction cups. The box is supported (and noise dampened) by the three suction cups. The pump hangs inside the suface skimming box.

It helped the noise in my case.

I'm not sure of its safety to use in a marine environment, but weather stripping should work perfectly to dampen some noise.

If the problem persists, you should consider putting it on a timer to shut off at night. Depending on your size tank the skimmer should be pulling everything within a 12 period time cycle anyway, so shutting it off at night shouldn't effect anything. Some people will even tell you that shutting it off at night can stimulate more moonlight coral feeding, because nutrients aren't removed from the water.

Thanks for the advice, I was pondering turning it off at night. I was wondering if it's ok let the water that is in the chamber to sit stagnant until the morning? I did it last night, didn't see any ill effects.

I use thick mouse pads for this kind of stuff. Perhaps on the outside wall between wall and Remora?

What kind of pump are you using on it? If not a MaxJet, you might want to get one of those.

+1 on mouse pad or maybe EPDM pond liner if you can find some sold by the square foot.

Thanks another good idea, I will try that also. I am running a MJ 1200 on the skimmer. The sad thing is I don't hear this vibration, she's just really sensitive to it. I just don't want to disturb the tank or cause any ill effects if I have to shut it off overnight. I thought I had read that skimmer's do most of their work at night?

It depends on when you feed. They do most their work while clearing the water of post feeding nutrients.
