damselfish identification

    please help me identify this fish i think it might be Stegastes planifrons but the purple is throwing me off

    Wow, I have seen this before. I cannot remember whether it's in a book or at the LFS. Give me a bit and I may remember.

    Found it. However, it is not Stagastes planifrons. It is a juvenile Stegastes favilatus. There is a resemblence to Stegastes diencaeus also, but my money is one the first one. The favilatus will grow to five inches and turn an overall brown color as an adult.

    This is fun.

    could also be a beaugregory juv, or longfin juv.

    I would say a longfin, need more info on it.

    I understand that, I am naming the species I think it is, a genus is too large sometimes to help.

    Longfin is a common name for the Stegastes diencaeus, but I think you hit the nail on the head. His looks almost exactly like the link I just posted.
