I kept a Blue Devil Damsel (terrorized my Royal Gramma) alive in a 1/2 gallon blue glass serving bowl for over a month. Kept it on my Master Bath vanity, right next to the sink. No heater, light, filter or pumps. Just the bowl filled with 1/2 gallon of saltwater. I did a 100% water change every 2-3 days. Eventually, I found a home for it.

I highly don't recommend doing that for that long (it wasn't very nice to the Damsel), but it just goes to show how tough Damsels are.

i dont think it is cruel whatsoever. if they can live through a cycling tank then what so bad about that. damsels can thrive in a tank with the crappiest conditions though!

The ammonia burns their gills. It would be like you breathing semi-toxic air for several weeks. Every breath burns your lungs, but doesn't do enough damage to actually kill you. Do you think that's an acceptable environment to be put in?

I'm not saying I'm without sin, but just answering your question as to why it shouldn't be done.
