i dont know if this makes any difference, but the ro units i get my water from are used for a semi conductor plant. the units them selfs are about half the size of the average home. out of all the water ive tried, grocery store bulk gallons, tap water, lfs water, it seems to need about twice the salt as all the others. it seems to hold the sg pretty firm.

though i am still fairly new to the hobby i was not aware of the suggestions youve made. i think i will swith to the probally correct way.
    thank you much

I think what Marc is saying is that when 5G of water evaps. Only water is leaving the tank, so the salt that is is the water is more concentrated. That would also be true for anything else suspended in the water.
Try to measure your salinity after you top up and before you will find it is significantly different. This is not good for you Tank inhabitants.
    I would top up daily

no problem dano. I was just saying cause i did the same thing at first and was told the same thing i told you... Now its been several years and i cant say that things are going better because of it. I never lost any live stock with your method... But its just logical i you know what i mean... Plus im probably not the only one that will tell you that 5gal top off is to much. I try to top off every couple of days... max every week. and its never more than 1 1/2 maybe 2 gals after a week. The more often you top off the better... but again thats JMHO.

When the water evaps and splashes around there is a little bit of salt that goes with it so when the water evaps completely all there is left is the salt (and other things you dont see). Commonly called salt creep. I think we all have some.

You should mostly find salt creep where there is vigorous surface agitation.  I try to keep the surface moving, but not so much that it gets salt every where ;D

Tank looks nice!  Kid and Cat are cute too!

You could probably use a bit more live rock, but that depends on how much livestock you want too.. What animals you got in there?

Maybe that pic is a mushroom?  Hard to tell from the photo! :D ;)
