Hello, I am thinking about getting a dwarf lion fish and I was wondering if it would be ok. I have a 55 with a flame angel, hippo tang, yellow tang, large cleaner shrimp, six line wrasse, and a few random chromis. Thanks for the advise. ~Jamie~

The dwarf might eat any fish that is as big as him and smaller. Not to mention the shrimp. Read up on them. I think that your pushing the envelope with those two tangs in a 55, but thats just me. Luna

My old lion would eat anything that would fit in it's mouth and more. One trip to the fish store I bought like four fish , like a dummy they were all small fish and i was a noob then. The second they went into the tank they went into his mouth ate all four with in 30 min, he had half a fish sticking out of his mouth that night. I think he ate them just because he could and I know he was'nt hungry cause i feed him before they went in hoping that he would leave them alone, boy was i wrong. So be careful with those lion fish.

I would stay away from lionfish. At first they seem cool but after a couple of week they are just a pain. You have to be careful anytime your hand goes in the tank. Mine was pretty small when I first got it and he still tried to eat fish that were bigger than him. I caught him one night with my tang in his mouth..so got rid of him...They will also stalk fish if they are not really well fed, and this seemed to cause a stressful environment..

I think that there is a slight difference between lion and dwarf/lion. What is the actual question?

Yeah Mission there is actually a pretty big difference, the dwarf lion will only get about 7 or 8" long where a Volitans, Antennata and Radiata lionfish will all attain between 10 and 15".

If the Lion is small you should be okay with what you have in your tank for a while. but once it grows a bit you might lose the six line wrasse, chromis. And as it has already been said you will most likely lose the cleaner shrimp.

my red fuzzy dwarf lion was in a 29 gallon reef with a cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp and a chromi for over a yr just fine.it only got to be 4 inches and one day it jumped out.i think it jumped cause the skimmer quit working and i left it off for over a month.you will need to watch water quality more.they are dirty fish but i really like them.they are ambush preditors so they can eat anything that gets to close and fits in the mouth.

Well thanks for all the advise. I think I will hold off for right now. My hippo tang, yellow tang and flame angel are all still pretty small. I do have a 120 that I plan to set up for them when they start to get to big. I have just been wanting to get a new fish and a lion sounded neat. Any ideas on what I could add?

I'd go with more corals or inverts and stay away from more fish, if you have to add more fish I'd think along the lines of a goby or something, they have lots of personality and actually provide a useful service to the tank as well
