Well good thing my herbie overflow has a backup drain. Woke up this morning to a Water falling sound a found a snail stuck in the overflow standpipe.
I also found my chromis in the return pump section of my sump. How he got there is crazy to me.

Any good ideas on how to keep the snails out without reducing the flow?

You can probably make a snail guard by adapting an old wave maker - something like the front of a Korallia type wave maker, as its got plenty of openings so will not cause to much effect on flow, but would prevent all but the smallest of snails getting through

Well the powerhead deflector didn't work but I just took a couple peices of eggcrate and superglued them to the top of the pipe. I think it will work out pretty good.
The snail that was in there is currently working double shifts since I had to fish him outa there with a coat hanger. lol I should banish him to the fuge
