How do you know if your snails are alive. I got my some of my clean up crew yesterday some of my florida ceriths and blue legs are not really doing anything. If they are dead should they be removed right away?

You can tell if they are dead if they don't move or react when touched or picked up. I have had some astrea snails die and they have actually just fallen off of the glass.

The florida ceriths can take upto three days to start moving around and doing their thing. I am not sure on the hermits, but I would give them a few days also. They don't have a lot on them to rot, so I wouldn't worry about a cycle unless you have a boatload in a 10g tank. And smelling is a great way of telling whether it is alive or dead. It is unmistakable. If you are unsure, it is probably alive.
