Deal or what?

So I usually take weekend trips or so with my gf or cousin to the LFS' around town and nearby just to check everything out; usually dont even buy anything but its fun anways. Well i was at this one LFS and they had a pond sized tank on the ground with rocks and fish in it; and there was this amazing shelf rock. I asked the guy to weigh it out for me assuming it was 7.99/pound of LR (which is the average price in Southern Ontario). The rock weighed out to be 30lbs (was a very dense rock). Anyhow, the guy told me that the rock was baserock because it wasn't very porous and such and would sell it as $2/pound. So i purchased the rock but it was very live indeed, containing many baby feather dusters, some beneficial worms, some type of coral on the underside which died however (due to my ignorance). I felt it was a pretty sweet deal and i had to chizzle a little bit of the rock away to fit in my 55 gallon.
