Dealing with an emergency

Brown hair algae is taking over my tank, fast.

It is taking over the corals. They have been shriveled up for I think over a month. Same with the Anemones

Kh is at 100
Ca is at 560

I know Ca should be way lower. How can I drop it and get my Alk back up.

Baking soda?

I'm not using any type of filter/protein skimmer/nothing except the turf scrubber. The turf scubber is only like 2 weeks old, so it still has time, but I think I'm going to lose everything first.

All test are spot on cept the Ca and the Kh

There has been so much going with my tank I have no idea what did what.

I just want this headache over.

Phos 0 - .25 The reason I say this is because is was just a very very low tint of blue. Way closer to 0.

Nitrate and Nitrite are 0 or <5

Ammonia is 0

Ph 8.1-8.3

Temp 78-80

I changed out some water yesterday in hoping to lower the Ca.

 

If you have that much algae I doubt your test are spot on.

I had a bad Cyano breakout and I was getting false readings.

 

Any chance that the tank is set up next to a window or getting some other form of excess lighting? What type of sand/rock?

since the turff scrubber is so new I would assume it is not yet effectively removing nutrients. I will also assume that the brown algae is consuming the nutrients and that is why you are not reading any Nitrate of Phosphate.
You will need to reduce your nutrient load until the Algae scrubber has a chance to catch up.

 

I don't know what you want to know or what else to tell you about it other than it has been up and running just a little over 2 weeks. I would prefer not to go into detail on how it works.

Just so everyone knows. I went with the turf scrubber about 2 weeks ago because I was already having a slight algae problem. About 2 weeks ago I had cyno bacteria, put in some chemi-clean and did a 20% water change after two days just like it said. Waited a day or two and did another dose because I though it wasn't gone, but it was hair algae.

Now the cyno is gone but this hair algae is getting a little rediculous.

I have increased feeding as the scrubber allows that. And just as Jason stated, that is the only thing I can think of, (Letting the scubber catch up), but my worry is that letting it go too long will wipe everything out.

Now would that be the reason why my corals have been sucked in since the cyno breakout? Could it be that the algae is just comsuming everything and the corals are not getting enough of what they need?

Yes I use tap water. After the scrubber is in full effect though, I will never need to change the water again.

Last night after the lights were off for an hour, I turned off all power heads and target fed my corals and anemones. Left it off for one hour.

My plan as of right now (well before I did started this thread):

Top tank lights are off.

Scrubber lights on hoping to reduce the algae in tank and promote growth on the screen.

While lights are off, the corals will extend their tentacles/arms/whatever. So right before I turned off the lights this morning I put in some Kent Marine Phytoplex hoping the corals will some get food.

As for raising Alk, I have heard of people baking, baking soda? 2 tsp for my tank IIRC?

BTW: My fish are/have been doing fine through all of this, all look healthy and all are eating through out the day. My yellow tang sometimes has algae on its head/face. It comes off after awhile, it just looks funny.
