Cut back in other areas. Started shopping at Aldi and am saving at least $100/week in groceries. Food quality is great too.

It can be an expensive hobby, but none more so than others. My two other hobbies are guns and music. Not cheap on either of those fronts either. Actually if I were to tally it up reefkeeping would be the least expensive hobby of that group. And hey, there could always be worse activities and habits we could be dumping our money on. Way worse.
I think corals would be the main offset. Or breeding fish. I trade my corals in at the LFS for store credit that gets used for food, additives, salt, etc. I actually haven't actually had to put any money on those sorts of items in months.
And at least for me, I don't really worry about it that much. It's more about the joy and relaxation this hobby brings into my life on a continual daily basis. And that right there is priceless.

I got a part time job at petco--Only work 2 nights a week and some 1/2 day saturdays. I love helping people get there tanks going, and taking care of the aquatics dept. Make about 280.00 take home every 2 weeks--That has completely covered all my saltwater costs, plus it lets my tank stabilize between purchases!!!!

There are ways you can cut cost if you just do research and get it out of your mind that you don't have to use Seachem, Red Sea and all the other name brand chemicals to make a tank work. There is stuff you can get at Kroger to make a tank run.

I have both hobbies,;golf and fish D:cry:I would not give up either. I just hit my first slow time in 10 years, no income but a welcome break. My wife just got a full time job this week to help. I just ordered 2 new corals today.Opps, She felt sorry for me not buying stuff for tank so she got me a mag subscription. Then I told her what I spent and she said I worked 2 days for corals with a laugh.

Its funny this subject came up. I was talking to my sister today and she was laughing about how all three of us girls have expensive hobbies. Our other sister photography, her into jewelry making and me saltwater aquariums. Luckily this is the only hobby my husband and I are spenting money on.
