In looking on youtube for more vids regarding the lighting system I bought today, I seen a debate in there about how the sun is very very bad for your reef, causes more problems than what its worth, I disagree and here is the proof.

In the few pics I have of this 90 tank, would you say by looking at whats there that it has any issues? look at pic 3, that's right, its the sun which it got between 4 and 6 hours of it a day, the staghorn grew at an alarming speed, the corals opened larger than any I seen under artificial lighting and there was no algae problems.
So what do you think about the sun?

That staghorn had to be cut back almost every 6 weeks to prevent from growing out of the water surface. a lot of the corals in there spreaded so fast that Corals were almost always constantly being cut back, fragging was very easy, place a small rock near some Corals and before long there was something growing on it.

I brought this up, cus starting sometime in Sept and going in to April my tank will get a western sun, at most about 3 hours worth with the winter sun.

I remember reading about a few people trying solar tubes a few years back which basically funnel sunlight into a room (or aquarium) but I never saw any real updates about how it worked out.

They work very well. You would need to add a ton of blue light though If you ever want to see the colors on the corals.

I would assume it would be like running 6500k iwasakis? I wonder if there are any type of filters you could use to shift the spectrum?

The growth looks good and everything looks healthy but everything looks brown too.
