    The skimmer removes disolved organic compounds from your water. When the doc's breakdown they turn into phosphates. So basically the skimmer yanks the nastiness before it has the chance to become phosphates. If you aren't in a position where you can cook your rock, I would look into getting a phosban reactor and setting that up too. It will take a while but it will absorb the phosphates as your rock leaches them

    Im sorry but those canisters are garbage. Thats probably your culprit. How often do you clean it out? Have you tested for PO4? If your having issues with Po4, you can either get a phosphate reactor(which is like $50 for reactor and media) or get the refugium instead of the skimmer.

    Hey drew3, before you go crazy and buy something, do the following.

    1. How old are your bulbs?
    2. You need to test for No3 and Po4 and post those results.
    3. How often do you clean out your canister?
    4. How often do you do Wc's?

    my bulbs are a year and nine months old i do what changes two times a week and my nitrates and phosphates are zero

    and i clean my canister whenever the water flow slows down enough that i notice
