They cause Algae as the lighting spectrum changes and then your problem begins. One thing I would recomend is to first buy a good saltwater how to book or do some research online as to proper qquipment and the how tos of saltwater tanks. I dont mean this in a rude way but it will help you a ton. The keys to salt water fish keeping is good filtration, Good lighting and a good skimmer. A fuse is also a important key. with almost 2 year old lighting you have a problem as well as not fantastic filtration and then with no skimmer or fuse you have the tank situation your in. If money is an issue a good place to get equipment is craigslist. I have a used marineland skimmer model 300 id sell cheap if your in a bind it was used for 2 weeks not that this is the problem at hand id address your lights first test kits second and the filtration and skimmer third. Just my .02

Ha I also just added a fuge! Kudos! I would say they are both important.. The fuge will def help with your PH and of course alk goes hand in hand with CA and PH. Hopefully you don't have to start all over. Good luck!

Glad you are asking lots of questions drew.. because it seems you have a lot to learn.

And doing local saltwater tanks your whole life and not knowing what a bioload is or testing properly or knowing to change bulbs in less than 2 years seems kind of odd.

Just a question.. how old are you?

To answer your original question even though I would say its not your issue (not that it couldnt help)... i would say skimmer. Most run just a skimmer in a sump. Fuge is nice down the road or if you can have both why not.

    Change your bulbs...

EDIT: Ohh and waiting for the canister to slow down... wow.. surprised you havent had a massive ammonia spike from the organics in that filter. Clean it weekly.
