    Thanks!

So there was too much noise from the overflow so I tried out two new things.

First I raised the height of the overflow by about an inch so the water didn't have to trickle so far:

Next I tried this reverse durso using 2" pipes:

And WOW, what a difference those two changes make. I need to find a better solution than the sponges to keep it at the right height, but I honestly didn't think that this would work that well.

Once I replace the mag 7 with a Sicce pump I think the noise problem will be all gone.

Looking good. Glad you took the valve off the drain.

One other thing tho, from the last pic above the flash is right is the way of the top of the durso pipe. ...however, it doesn't appear to be assembled like a typical durso, unless I'm just not seeing it correctly in the pic, hard to tell.

It looks like just 2 90 degree elbows attached together then attached to the veritcal pipe.
This is where your turbulence is coming from. Google durso standpipe and click images.
You essentially need a tee at the top of the vertical standpipe, you attached the 90 elbow to the horizontal hole and you add a short (2 or 3 inch) piece of pcv to the top and then put a cap on top of that. In the center of the cap, you drill a hole, start small and make it larger if you need.
That standpipe needs to expel the air at the top, that way, it won't make a ton of noise forcing air down into the sump where it creates bubbles.

Also, you don't need to glue any of the fittings at the top of the standpipe, just hand tight is all you need. (you may have to take them off for cleaning in the future when the tank is full of water.)

When you're finished, you should be able to get rid of that pvc creation in the sump because you essentially fixed the problem at the top!

Better to do it right now than when you can't when it's full of critters.

Thanks. I think the flash did block the top of the durso. It is a T with a cap at the top. Thanks for the input.

Still tinkering with the plumbing. I think I like this. No ball valves restricting flow, no T's, and it's really quiet. Anything I'm missing that I should address?

The nice thing about not being able to set this up yet is I actually have time to think things through...

My new clowns that will be housed in the DB 57g once it's set up.

The bigger one is a Sustainable Aquatics black ice ocellaris and the smaller one is a Sea and Reef black ice ocellaris.
