Well, after 2 years in the hobby, its finally (hopefully) time for an upgrade. The new tank will be a sexy 85 wide rimless (36"x26"x22") and in keeping with the theme, it will be a BB tank with no refugium. Oversized skimmer, ATO dosing Kalk and perhaps pellets or MB7. Yes I want this to be ULNS since I want to get into smoothskin/deepwater (think A. suharsonoi, A. echinata). Well I've been hearing conflicting advice:
Some say that they should be kept under ledges and in actinic light
Others say they can color up in higher light
So where should I place them?
The lighting (for now) will be 1 250w MH with either 15K or 20K bulbs (help me decide on that too) so I was thinking I could keep regular tabling (Another favorite) directly under the MH and smooth skin across near the edges and lower, sound good?
I will have a low profile scape, minimalist and probably 2 islands.

You don't have to hammer them with light.I have a few A. echinata and they are almost at the bottom. They encrusted and are colored up and are growing.I have 2 x 250 20k xm's and 8 T5's for light, tank 20 inches deep. And i have a few tablers only 12 inches from the halides getting blasted by light, and loving it.

Thanks for that man! I'll be getting some suharsonoi frags when you get them back in!

Could I feasibly use basically a 20K halide or full blue LED?

I think so on the halide. Not enough spectrum with the blue LED. I would add in some white to the LED.

What would I be looking at PAR wise for the true deepwater corals? Like 70ish?
