My nitrates run about 20ppm & I want to install a DIY denitrator. I understand that it will take a few weeks for it to start working to its full potential, so is there anything I can do in the mean time?

We have a phosphate reactor, is there a good medium I can run in it until the denitrator kicks in?

    Thanks!

Water changes will help bring the nitrates down, so instead of doing 1 a week do 2 a week. I have a nitrate coil from tangster and I am letting it break in I have had it running for about 3 weeks, but I hear it takes close to 2 months to break in. I will be testing the water soon to see what the level is, but right now I am starting to win a red hair algae war!

    Hey! Hello!

I'm using SN400 sulfur-based nitrate reactor by Aqua-Medic. Very neat device! It's supposed to be far more effective than standard anaerobic denitrification! Just a quote from the source article:

if you want my honest opinion, 20ppm isnt that huge, I'd just carry about with my normal water changes, and let the denitrating coil break in.

then again I dont know what's in your tank but 20ppm I wouldn't stress over in any of my tanks I actually wish I could get some NO3 to a detectable point in my nano

I'm with Iraf on this one. Mine has been running about 20 to 25 for months now. My denitrator is kicking in slowly (Almost at the two month mark). I actually decreased my number of monthly WCs.

I built one about a month ago but have'nt set it up yet. It only cost about 25-30 bucks. I just wanted to see another pic of one to compare. If you have some handy man skills it should only take about 1hr to build.
