Could I keep a Derasa Clam under my 48 in Current Nova Extreme Pro T5? I have a 120 gallon 5 foot tank that I keep the Calcium at a minimum 400 and Alk at about 1.9-2.1.

If I can keep one, does anyone have any opinions/recommendations/experience with these clams? It would also be pretty sweet if anyone could post some pics of their clams. ;D

    Thanks,

    Robert

    Easily....

derasa's are one of the easiest and hardiest of tridacna clams to keep. They certainly don't need the light that a crocea needs. How many bulbs are on that Nova? I bet you could keep more than just derasas.

I will post a pic of my derasa in my 5 footer. I have had it a few weeks, and I have a crocea as well. But I do have 2x250 of MH, in addition to the t5s on my 200g.

It is a 6 bulb model. Right now it only has the factory bulbs on it, but I was planning on switching those out once I find a setup that I like and where to buy some quality bulbs.

Thanks for your quick reply and picture, that clam is pretty awesome. What other requirements do the Derasa clams need in specific? Feeding? Chemistry?

Really beyond calcium, alk and other regular coral needs, not much. I do have a calcium reactor, so my calcium and alk needs are maintained by that equipment. If dosing ca and alk, I bet adding a clam will consume a lot more ca and alk.

Okay, and there are two part solutions that I can purchase from LFS's as well as online? Thanks for your answers.

Yes, or you can DIY your own. Driveway de icer (not rock salt the magnesium chloride) and I think baking powder can be used. Kalkwasser can be does as well, and that is simoly pickling lime added to top off water for a calcium additive. Epsom salt can be used as a magnesium supplement as well. The DIY part of this hobby can save a ton of $$ over buying expensive solutions.

There are some great DIY sites out there.
Look at bulk reef supply.com as well.

I am overcoming a little bout with cyano from setting my new tank up, but that is getting resolved.

What are the specs on your tank? Size/age/lights/skimmer/filtration/etc? I am trying to overcome some Green Hair Algae that seems to be taking over the tank. I am currently running a media reactor with Bellaphos in it, but have yet to see results.
