So, I have an algae outbreak that has been going on for several weeks, and I would like to identify the type of algae (in hopes that it's not bryopsis).

Well, many discussions that I have read say that you need a microscope to identify it, however, I have searched on the internet for magnified pictures of both GHA and bryopsis and they still look very similar to me.

I do have a microscope and have looked at my algae at 100x and 600x... I do believe I can identify what it is IF I knew what I was looking for.

Can someone help me with some definitive answers on what to look for?

The closest thing I have to a positive ID is I found a lot of green shaped objects like in picture F on this link: Gamete Studies which if that is the case, turns out to be gametes of the Derbesia type of algae.

Before I get my hopes up, I'd like to see what the experts have to say.

(I'll also see if I can get some clear pictures of what's under my microscope, though that may be difficult)

    Thanks!

    Will

So, I took some pictures using my iphone camera held up to the eyepiece of the scope.

here are the results... not too bad, actually :) :

    1. The first photo, magnified to 100x, I circled what I think are the gametes in green and the red arrow is pointing to a strand of algae.

2+3. The second and third are @ 600x, showing a closeup of what looks like the female gametes of Derbesia or GHA.

    4. This is photo #1, unmodified.

    Great pics.

From the looks of it, I'd tentatively agree that it looks like Derbesia tenuissime's female gametes. I'm far from any knowledgeable source though

I don't know enough to even have an opinion, just wanted to say I'm impressed with the pics!
