I don't. I let the fuge build up with crude. I heard that you want your fuge to be swamp like. My flow is fairly slow. The only thing I do is rinse out the chaeto once a month.

I have a powerhead that turns on a couple times a day for about a minute. I use it for the dual purposes of stirring up the crud in the fuge and blasting a few pods out of their hiding places.

Oh wow - I really like that idea - keeps stuff more spread out - less "pockets" - do you find any major differences with this method over not stirring?

I don't have a sandbed down there either. I just siphon out as much of the crud as I can during water changes.

I just added a sand bed to my fuge last week and a couple of pieces of LR.It looks like a mini display tank now, lol.Im not sure what the sand is supposed to do.The LFS guy says it gives the macro algea a place to attach and root but my cheato was doing fine without it,I guess the main reason I put it in was because I saw the sump at the LFS and it had a sand bed (deeper than mine tho).So I figured it couldn't hurt. :-/

...and have a gigantic spike in nutrient levels a year or two down the road? No thanks.

You want to trap nutrients, not detritus.

The sand bed in a fuge provides a place for reducing nitrate to nitrogen.
