    They sift the sand and really eat whatever goes through IME..But they hunt for small animals in the sand, but they will eat the algea in the sand also..They ahve never eatin cyano for me though..They stay away from those areas.

    If they don't find it edible, they push it back out through their gills along with the sand. They're carnivores and only eat meaty foods. They'll stir up the algae in the sand but they don't eat it.
