I have a newish 29gal that i used live sand, live rock, live water, and live filter media to start up with and somehow still ended up with a diatom disaster, it grows so fast that corals get covered not being able to slime it off quickly enough, so they wont open! what do i do im getting ticked at the algae god........ my parameters are in fantastic order

Everyone ends up with the diatom outbreak at the beginning. Just a fact 'o life. I have had three tanks and it happened in all of them. Just turkey baster them off your coral. That's all you need to do at this point. The brown you see are dead diatom skeletons. Once the silicates are used up, the diatoms will die off. Which brings me to two questions. One has been asked: How old is your tank? The other is: What kind of water are you using? Tap, RO, RODI?

diatom algae is one of those unsightly zits, that our tanks can't avoid on the road to maturation called puberty.

thats normal your tanks still pretty new... all tanks go through algae phases it will eventually go away as along as you keep using ro water and your parameters right. Wait until you encounter red slime.....

Diatoms feed only on silicates and once that is devoured as a energy source by the diatoms then they die and are gone for good and that is at about week 3 to 4 in a new set up . If you keep getting them then you have to be adding some source of food for them.. Maybe want to test the TDS of your make up water and rule out a bad membrane or not enough rejection or an improper rejection rate for the feed water pressure to the R/O unit .. But at 8 weeks you should be moving on to other algae problems ..Are you on well water be it a private well or public community well.
