I think it needs a good pressure rated pump, more cost and higher energy use

I am surprised they use Rio pumps. These cheap pumps are known to have caused a few electrical fires. Any product prone to electircal fire does not get a second chance with me because of my family and home safety priority.

They don't supply the pump. They just sell the skimmer, and the OP bought a Rio pump himself (I think).

A Mag 9.5 worked very well in the skimmer for a guy on another site I go to He said it did a great job for the skimmer But the skimmer apparently left him lacking ? I have had as many Maxie and Mags to mess up as I have RIO's Rios hit a rough patch several yrs back when They split out and TAAM;s went one way and RIO went the other . I had a RIO 800 to kill a clam once from a skimmer .. But they like most did get their product back up to quality , Same can be said by many makers or pumps lighting and skimmers even.. I still use Rios as well as Maxis and Mags . You still get good and bad in Fords and Chevy's even..

My complaint with it is that it is a bit on the loud side. Right now I'm just using it to circulate water until I get my tank plumbing done.. Hopefully tonight. From there I will set up the skimmer with this pump and see what we get. I may take it back and complain about the noise.. For the most part a pump that small should be quiet.
