I was getting tired of my green hair algae, so I just started to rip it off of the rocks, while putting the waste in a net and then trying to catch the rest in the net as it floated by. I then continued to siphon off as much as I could off of the rocks with my siphon. I continued to siphon the sand, getting all of the waste that settled to the bottom. Finally, I replaced all of the water with some fresh RO/DI and saltwater.

So my question is did I just make a mistake by disturbing all that algae? Will I see a spike in nitrate/nitrite/ammonia? Will the water change off set the disturbance. It came out to about 10 gallons of fresh clean water that was replaced into the tank.

    How big is your tank?
How deep was your sand bed and how deep is it now?

The tanks is a 120 Gallon 5 foot long tank. The sand bed is about 2-3 inches in spots, but that did not change. It is the same depth, I just siphoned the sand to get all the crap out of it.

You will be fine, 10 gallons is not even 10% of your water volume.

Why do you have so much algae?
Do you know your water perameters?
Maybe we can figure out what the problem is?

Your Algea was already in the tank so you just sucked some out and displaced some. You have to be careful to not disturb the sand bed if you would have a deep sand bed but you don't so your good:)

I am unsure as to why I have so much algae. I am limiting inputs but I did just install a media reactor with some Bellaphos in it to try to eliminate what is in the tank.

    My params are normal:

    Sg 1.025
    Ph 8.1
    Nitrate 0
    Nitrite 0
    Calcium 540
    Alk normal
    Ammonia 0

If you need any more info on the tank let me know.

Phosphates I am unsure (that is why I am running the phosphate remover

For fish I have a Blue Hippo Tang, Two Spot Bristletooth tang, two misbar oscellaris clowns, two green chromis, one cleaner wrasse, a diamond goby, a conch, one tuxedo urchin. I have a handful of snails and hermits, a purple lobster, two cleaner shrimp and two peppermint shrimp.
For corals I have a lot of SPS frags, a frogspawn, a variety of zoos, a xenia, a kenya tree, some GSP, and some mushrooms/ricordeas.

The tank was start at the beginning of summer, so it is about 4-5 months old now.
