I feel like i should know this by now but what are the differences between VHO and t5's

One guy i know who has been in the hobby for 20+ years swears by VHO so i just want to know why they are so coveted by him

I was under the impression that VHO are only fashioned in T12 bulbs. Could be wrong, but that is what I thought.

VHO's are an older technology, but still are a viable source of light for either actinic supplements of primary lighting. they are T12's, and usually have internal reflectors unlike T5's that are somewhat dependant on good reflectors. VHO's use way more power and throw more heat than T5's, but IMO look much better to the naked eye IMO.

haha. Imaginge a VHO bulb with a reflector. Would that help with even more light?

I know that VHO are 1.5" & T5HO are 5/8"(or very close to).

VHO is more intense i believe.. 48" t5 is 54w, 48" vho is 110w. Vho needs alot of juice.. I still see alot of locals using them as actinics with mh.. even LFS.. only downfall is short lifespan like a PC bulb..UVL i believe is the best for vho too.

VHOs were very popular years back. They made a lot of believers out of people that used them. I always liked that you could use a dimmer switch on them for smooth dawn/dusk transitions.

I wish t5 would have a dimmer. :( That's what I've been researching about. As you may have guessed, I haven't gotten very far.
