What is the difference in the vertex n100 skimmer and the 2009 octopus nwb 150 skimmer. What makes vertex only rated for 100g and the oct rated for 150g they both have a 6" body there about the some height. Help a newbie out. Explain what to look for in a skimmer.

Manufacturers rate the skimmer based on the technology and pump used. Most are rated for a lightly stocked tank. You want to get a skimmer that is rated 33 to 50% greater than your tank size.

i really like when a company posts tank size ratings as light, medium, heavy bio load. cant remember which ones i have seen listed like that.

a sea clone would probably work great on a 500 gallon tank with one blue damsel

I can't really tell the specs on the Octo, but it based on how much air and water the pump pulls. Skimmer body can only handle a range of air and water. So while the bodies are similar, the pump is probably putting out more on the 150.

Then of course it could come down to simply differences between companies, and one company over rating their skimmer.

Between the two I would take the Vertex. Get the 180 if need be. Good skimmer. Bublle plate, and very smooth transition to the neck.
