    Hi,

I use a battery-powered gravel vac. When I start getting sand, just release the button. The sand settles back out faster than detritus. You may need to increase your flow to help keep waste in suspension until it can be removed by the filter/overflow.

There are sand sifters that will help keep your sandbed clean, but at this point they'd probably do more harm than good by burying more than they eat.
