I wasn't trying to compare a petition to proposed laws, just pointing out that nothing came of it just like you said that the Vincent bill passed but wasn't really enforced.

Not quite sure what my wife being the primary caretaker of children has to do with this discussion.Maybe you can clarify what you are trying to say.If you could try and do it without insulting me that would be nice. No one is making you out to be anything. You are what you are. I thought we were having a healthy debate about this show? It would take alot more then this to get me worked up, life is short. Just because you don't see the point does that mean we shouldn't care?

I like the show myself,it's for entertainment not education and like others mentioned,as with any reality show, theres is sooooo much going on behind the sceens,i'm quite sure it's not as bad as the debate on thier "methods" is making out to be.I'm also quite sure many of these tanks take months of planning and building.Take the beer keg tank on the other nights show for example, they spent a total of mabey 10 mins show time devoted to it,but just forming the barrel shaped tank took some serious talent and artwork, theres so much we'll never see on the show. It's the same as American chopper building a custom chopper in one episode. It's way more about the drama than the tanks or choppers or bounty hunter,or etc, etc.

+1, It is a show about a company that makes tanks for people. And most of these tanks are entertainment tanks, like the Mob tank. It's not about educating the public on how the aquarium hobby really works; it's about entertainment showing how a tank and it equipment is made and how the people who do it socialize with each other.

Personally I think the show is great.

Gotcha. Even though the bill wasn't enforced, its still on the books and could be enforced at any time.
These newer bills have more teeth and more backing. I think we as a community ignore them at our own peril.

To say kids are "easier" than fish... dood.... raising children that aren't messed up is the single most toughest job evah... EVAH! It wasn't an insult, it was just the truth. Either you don't have 'em or you're not the primary caregiver.

I'm not saying not to care, I'm just voicing my opinion that I find this to be an odd thing to get ticked about. Call foul on the actual treatment of fish. My peeps are fisherman, the treatment of fish is horrendous before it hits our plate. You say you care for fish, then direct your attention to something that actually means something in their lives. This is a waste of energy, IMO.

I'm sorry you think I'm "attacking" you, but I'm just voicing my opinion as well. I'm not an attacking kind of person, so there's no confrontational tone in my typing.

Most people don't watch these shows.
Even less will try to emulate them and their practices.
Even less will do so without doing any research first.

Most people will take it for what it is.... mindless television.

I see tanked as a mixed bag.

We must keep in mind that this is the first time our hobby has been showcased to a national audience. The reality is that this show is bringing more people into the hobby. Why, because people are awestruck when they see that they too can have a beautiful aquarium in their home. I have had no less than 3 people that have seen the show and asked me how to get started. This is where we can impact the way we are viewed. People who become interested in the hobby need to be pointed in the right direction. They are not going to look at this show and think they know all there is to know about building an aquarium. To assume this would be nuts on our part. They are going to go out and ask someone.

Who out there goes to open a restaurant just because they watched an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. You have seen why bad restaurants fail and Gordon Ramsey has shown you what it takes to succeed so why doesn't more people out there do it. It's so simple right? No it's not and you have enough common sense to know that.

What makes this show any different? Do we really think that people are going to jump in the hobby with both feet and it's sink or swim? I don't think so. If they want to jump in the hobby they are going to ask someone who knows way more than they know.

To criticize this show and not criticize public aquariums is hypocritical. Public aquariums show none of their husbandry, filtration, and lighting to the general public. Doesn't that make them bad too? Shouldn't that warrant a disclaimer on their doors? I guess not!

If this show is a success, more will follow. In the future those shows may want to up the ante by being more informative. For now though I hope the show stays.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
If you are comparing public aquariums to tank in regard to they both expose the public to fish and marine creatures you have a very valid point.

If you are comparing a show that adds fish to conditioned tap water in uncycled systems to a public aquarium that goes through rigorous collection, quarantine and acclimation proceedures, that is comparing apples to oranges.

Public aquariums do a huge service to communities both educational and preservation of species.
