    Hey all,

As some of you may know, i got a new frogspawn. I've noticed some things once i put it in...I'm suspecting the "chemical warfare" thing going on with this one, but i'm not sure!!

What is the ideal distance for this coral to be placed in relation to other coral? I have a tree coral on one side of the tank and on the other the frogspawn...and ever since the frogspawn went in, the tree coral hasn't been opening up all the way.

Another weird thing i've noticed is that sometimes it opens fully at night. I've never seen a coral do this before...what's going on!?

I don't know about opening at night but they do have those sweeper tentacles that they will put out at night. Not all will do this though, actually only one of mine does, the other does not. I just keep them away from my other corals so they don't touch them at all, except for mushrooms that one is by and it doesn't seem to bother them. I can't stand the feeling of the slimy stuff on the frogspawn uggghh...

They, like most corals, can produce a mucus coat when disturbed or aggitated. The sweepers on a frogspawn can be several inches long, so I would keep it at least 4-6 in. away from other corals. If the flow is one way, you can keep a corals closer to the upstream side if you want. The flow will prevent the sweepers from contacting that coral.

I've never seen sweepers on mine. Do save room for growth though. Mine went from one head to 10 in 14 months and is now the size of a large softball.

I've seen the sweepers on mine a couple times. It's a strange coral, I don't have many corals but judging from the length I saw keep them around 4-5 inches away, at least. Mine has 3 heads that open up fairly big, and they will grow, so make room for growth.

I know what you mean bout the slime - only happens when it's irked about something though, like a water change, or the decorator crab poking it.

one thing you dont have to worry about is other corals of the same nature. you can have torches and hammers next to each other without worry of they hurting one another. but keep them away from other coral other then the corals named

This has been debated by many and I for one disagree. I have a Torch that has completely destroyed one frogspawn and on smaller hammer and and there are witness to this fact. I have never had a problem with Hammers and frogspawns touching but I would not put a torch anywhere near anything else.

As far as the frogspawn and the tree coral goes, it could very well be that they are to close. And at night the frogspawn if its anything like mine closes up partially which allows the tree coral to open up more. I would move them apart till the tree seems happy again.

    well an update..

I was thinking about what gazog said, about the frogspawn closing up at night thus allowing the tree coral to fully open. I don't understand why the tree coral would close up when there are no sweepers and they are at least a good 10 inches away from each other...and still the tree coral will not open 100% is there a possibility that the tree coral/frogspawn is emitting some sort of chemical into the water column? does that ever happen?
