Does it matter how deep i make it as long as i make the linear length appropriate to the flow i want to achieve?

    thanks

just remember when The power goes out the tank will drain till it gets to where you drilled it.....I have seen tanks drill on the bottom even but dont try that yourself

If you put a bulkhead on it, and use PVC fittings, you can control the level much better.

it will be using a durso. but my question is to achieve the flow i want do just build it to the right linear length specs? does the height and width matter?

I would assume that the height of the standpipe does not matter very much, it will just determine the depth of the water in the overflow area.

I would also assume that the width of the standpipe only needs to be large enough to accomadate the water from the return; that is to say that if it's too small, it won't flow fast enough to drain the water that is being moved back into the tank by the return pump. Ie: When in doubt, go with a larger diamater standpipe than you think you'll need.

Reefjack is spot on. The size of the overflow does not matter, and you should oversize the drain line to be bigger than the return line.
