I have been using this felt filter bag, it comes with a zip ty and a fine mesh bag on the inside.
    Micron Felt Bags - AquaCave

It works well for my setup. This gets pricy though as I am a bit lazy and want to throw it away instead of cleaning and re using.

I found Felt material and fine mesh material at Wally World. I could make dozens for the price of 6 of these.

Question is, Any particular worries with various materials ? It just says its felt, not sure what the mesh one was made from.

    Cheers

i would say that the threading or the "mirco" filtering properties would be important as well. as long as the felt isnt treated or coloured i dont see why not. It just may not keep your media in as well.

No media, I just use it to attach via the zip ty to my sump intake to trap debris. I do use a media bag and hang on the right side on the sump but those ar 3.00 and I can use one for a year.

Not quite the seemstress I used to be but it will work.

These are the materials, $5.00 wally work makes 15 filters vs $5.00 for one

Finished product on the left, purchased one on the right. I actually wanted it smaller as the purchased one was too long anyway.
This will work out nice so when I add the ATO float the filter wont be in the way.

    A slight Down Turn..

So everything looked good, but some down sides.
The new sock only lasted a week. I put on another, and after only a few days it was clogged and it started to blow up a bit.

When I heard something weird, I looked undernieth and looked at the filter sock, It had trippled in size and was ready to pop. I took it out and pressure went back to normal.

YIKES... So for now, I am running sock less, I may use one from time to time for a day here or there just to get rid of the micro debris that drives me crazy...

Too bad though, I thought they came out great.. Maybe just the wrong type of felt. It certainly wasnt as see through as the manufactured ones.
