Well I made a bit of an oopsie, I ordered a 250W Eheim Jager heater based on your recommendations. Now I'm stuck with a bit of a dilemma: my heater will not fit in my sumps chambers. I could easily put it in the main tank, the problem being this is an anemone propagation tank and I don't want my nems getting toasted after sitting on heater and killing everything else. Does anyone have any ideas as to a good DIY guard for a heater? I figure plastic Gutter-Guard or bird netting would do the trick, but I 'd like to see your ideas. I need something cheap I could pick up at HD.

Could I maybe put it in the down pipe drain to my sump?

Hmmm. Maybe an eggcrate cage around it? Putting it in the the line to your sump. It would cut down on flow and if something somehow got stuck in the pipe it could be catastrophic. The Jager series of heaters by Eheim are really nice. You will be happy with it when you get it up and running.

+1 to egg crate. Just use zip tie to form a box.

Egg crate is too big, news will get through it. I'm currently going to hang it from my return spray bar with zip ties.
