    Merry Christmas all!!!

I really want to build my own HOB refugium. I have a 45 gallon bow tank. If I build a refugium that holds about 2-3 gallons of water will that be big enough? I am also thinking about just getting a rectangle shape box, put a slow pump for the input on one end and place the output on the other end of the refugium and nothing else. I am also thinking about just letting my aquarium lights serve as the light source. I read matt's post and will try to get a species that does not spore- thanks again Matt.

    Any comments or suggestions?

I was also just thinking about growing the macroalgae in the tank itself. Any thoughts on doing that?

You can turn an aquaclear into a fuge easily. I did it with an emporer/penguin power filter. The aquaclears are better because you can adjust the flow easily. A couple pieces of egg crate and a small light and your all set. I'd paint it too, with some krylon, I hate the look of the box being illuminated at night. A simple slide of the intake and you can flush pods out at night once in a while and then adjust it back to minimum flow.

The only plus to the emporer was it was cheaper,it was already black, and I can slide carbon pads in easily to polish the water. The downside was I had to find a tiny powerhead and silicone some acrylic in to slow down the flow. With the flow full blast I swamped my tank after the output clogged with cheato :(

you can get a put-to-gether-yourself model on ebay for dirt cheap. ($50 for 30inch). Just a thought.

That is a good point. You can buy them pretty cheap now.

Covey I remember your tetra filter mod, that was cool. 8)

Hey euthyphro, Well it's not a major problem but with that setup you will miss out on reverse daylight photosynthesis. Fancy smancy RDP just means that you have the refugium on an opposite lighting schedule than your tank lights. (overlapping a bit)

Have you ever noticed your pH is a lot lower in the morning? RDP helps prevent this and help you keep a stable pH. The biggest problem I had in my nano was maintaining pH.

If you are not going with 24/7 then RDP is something to consider. For what it's worth.
