hey i built this skimmer , and it only cost me about 10$ not including the PH and air pump. it runs off a 175 gph powerhead. 3 air stones (you could add up too 6 if you wanted) returns to the tank threw a spray bar. comes apart in 2 places for easy easy cleaning, not noisy at all, and suprisingly skims a good amount of waste.color ranges from dark pee- grey mud (for only having one fish).once i get a good bioload im sure it will collect alot more waste. my water is crystal clear. maybe not the best design but it works i swear.
LET me know what you all think? IF you have any questions about the setup id be happy to answer.
the pics are from when i first started it. ill get some updated pics of the junk it collects when my camera charges.

skimmer top_1_1_1_1_1.JPG well i just spent 6 hours adding more live rock and doing a water change. i love water change day.... not. well the skimmer info is pretty simple.
    materials
.5 inch pvc and .5 elbows
2 food storage containers( heavy plastic, snap on lids with rubber seal)found at supermarket.walmart.ect..
2.5 inch pvc for the neck
    air line
    T connecters
penguin 660 PH(i would imagine any PH rated atleast 170gph)
    dual outlet air pump
3 limewood air stones( or as many as you can fit, the more the better)
    silcone sealent
little picture shelf to support the skimmer( you could rig up something else but this worked for me)

try to keep the skimmer water the same height as the water in the tank or close to it.that way there is not really any stress on the small PH.
the pic should tell you how i constructed it very basic, you could add or do things different. once you know how a skimmer works then the sky is the limit. there is no better way to learn then to build one.

i got alot more diy projects lined up ..canopy with lights not sure what kind yet, fuge, moonlights.
oh yeah i cleaned that collection cup yesterday
