looks cool - used low voltage christmas tree lights - will be putting blue in tommorow also i think

Cheap alternative to the retail stuff

Is red ok- i.e. the livestock don't mind it

Red is fine. It will not do any good in terms of photosynthetic activity. In fact, I don't think the livestock will even be able to 'see' the red. They actually market 'invisible' netting that is red. Great when it is still, but motion will give it away.

EDIT: And you may want to check out your link. It is giving me nothing, as if you defined the location of the pic, then changed folders.

I thought that the red light attracts snails, crabs, and shrimp?

Red is fine, and like john said, most wont even be able to see it. Its actually a cool thing to do to use red lighting to view the nocturnal activity of your tank, as the fish wont notice and you can get it fairly bright.
What I would be worried about is algae. A LOT of nuisance algae thrives under red spectrum lighting, so it might be a good idea for lunars as they would be on quite often

yeah no probs just got set up so trying to figure out what i need to get rid of - spotted approx20 bristles - loads of single small tentacly things that stretch quite far, and loads of small shrimp type things - fished the rock with the big bristle out for closer inspection - will post some photos - i've found something really weird - its like a small round spiky white ball- i'll post in id this later

It is a cool idea. LED's are, at the core of things, incredibly cheap and reliable. It is downright outrageous what they charge for LED systems, whether it be the lunar's or the full lighting systems they have now

Yea, it's funny too cause the wife and I use a red light at night when we look at the tank.. Never really knew the fishies could not see red... just something we used cause we have that ole'military light at our bed. lol
