Ahh... LED's. Very cool. I have read some interesting threads on them not too long ago. Somebody was attempting to make a daylight version powerful enough to grow coral. I will try to dig it up when I have time.

The cheap 9 dollar blue rope light from home depot works great for me

Walgreans had those blue rope lights on sale after holloween a few years back for 4 bucks a pop, I stocked up and did the same as you (moonlight for my tank).  I use the rest to add a glow to our wholesale facility so the fish are never in a completly darkenned tank.  It helps keep them in the tanks when the main lights pop off (tanks uncoverred when the lights go off can cause floors to attract fish )_

That is very interesting. Now I know what to tell people that say the fish jumped out of the tank last night. Thanks for the info.

 

One of the major wholesalers in L.A. showed an example to a freind of mine of how bad lights shutting off instantly can do. He turned the facility lights off then back on a minute later to a floor of fish. One of the nice things about MH, the don't just pop off, they dim out (fairly quickly, but they do dim out MUCH slower then any other lighting we use). I have dimmable MH's for some of my home tanks, they can ramp up for 2 hours and ramp down for the same. I have them on a 1/2 hour ramp cycle though. To bad they were discontinued and the bulbs cost your 1st born + your left nut.
