If you're not doing SPS, there's no need for crazy flow through the sump. You could easily use a Mag 7 (about $80 on marinedepot.com) that has 400gph at 6' head.should be more than enough flow through the sump. I mean, unless your sump is in the basement 40 feet away from the tank, there's no reason to need some of the larger pumps these guys are running.

When I do my 40b display w/ 40b sump, that's the pump I'll go with. For multiple reasons. They're quiet, extremely reliable, and don't put too much heat into the system.

Just keep in mind, I know it has been said a few times but should be reiterated, the gph that your pump advertises will not be the same as the gph that will be going through your sump due to head loss. This is the vertical distance that the pump has to push the water from up your sump back into your tank plus any 90 degree turns that the plumbing takes. Make sure you take that into account. Most reputable pumps will give you a head loss chart to consult.

The pump I listed (Marineland NJ3000) can be had for ~$67 including shipping. Max flow 775 gph (600 gph @ 2 ft.; 575 gph @ 3 ft.; 525 gph @ 4 ft). Just an option ;)
