Yea auto top offs are nice! As for seperation were you thinking of baffels? Anyways as far as tubing. What Im going to do is mostly PVC pipe 1" but where it connects to my pumps/overflows etc. is use about a 1ft section of flexible tubing and then connect that to my rigid PVC,

Baffles! Thats it. Funny I couldn't think of the word even though I knew what it was. Pipes won't be too ahrd for me, just need to decide which ones I am going to get.

I was going to consider a 10g to put underneath my tank, its dimensions are 24L x 8.5W width I think it is.

Hey, I have a 55too, and tried to put a ten in the stand and it would not fit, I took the measurements of the 10 and it is 10.5w x 20 long. I am rebuilding a stand to fit a 29 and the ten underneath.

No my tank is 36 gallons (see signature). I suppose you though I had a 55 beause maybe it is common for a 10g to be put under them? Anyways. The stand is bowed. There are 8 total inches of width on each side of the stand (very ends), and width increase going into the center. If I can get a 20" long, depending on width, I might be able to fit one. I can surely fit a 5.5 gallon, but it would only be a fuge since it is not big enough.
