Alright everyone I am starting the building of a DIY stand for my 75 gallon tank.

I have found many different examples online and watched multiple videos. This will be 2x4 construction. I want to be able to put a 50 gallon (48" long tank) in the bottom for a sump.

Many online say that 2x4 construction is overkill, compared to commercially bought stands.

My question is for a 75 gallon (48x18 ) does there need to be a upright center support on the stand. Many online say no, but others say yes.

I would like to have ease of removal of the sump if needed.

Nope, no center brace needed if you do it right. I did my 90 gallons using a template I found on reef central. It was really easy and I have had no issues without a center brace. Check out the link in my signature to see my build.

I have a 5 foot long 140 gallon tank with no center support. I have 2x6 on the top though. For your tank if you do 2x4 you should have more than enough strength. If your worried about it just put one center support in the back or put doors on the sides of the stand so you can slide your sump in and out that way.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate it. Looking at my commercially bought 55 gallon stand (made with MDF) I don't think I will have any issues. +1 for everyone. Have a great weekend.
