I'm putting my tank in the living room of my new house and my first thought is my DIY sump is a bit noisy with the waterfall noises from my skimmer and return. Would a pre made reef sump fix this problem? I'm trying to think of all the bugs I have and fix them while my tank is down. Thanks

I don't see how a pre-made sump would be any less noisy. There are ways to quiet a system though. What style overflow is in your tank, and how do the drains enter your tank?

My 75gal is corner drilled. I have a flex hose that sits in a "basket" I made with filter media in it and that slowly trickles into my sump. The basket and my skimmer are at the same level. Only way I can cut the noise down is by adding water daily to keep the level just under where the outlet of my skimmer and basket are. Hope that helps, if not I can take a pic of my setup.

Pictures would help. Ideally, your drain will be either a stockman or a durso, and then a reverse durso as it enters your sump. Doing both can make your system nearly silent. The fans on my lights are far noisier than the drains on my 125.

If I'm reading this right, your sump has no baffles? You need to add baffles and section it off so the skimmer and drains can be in a section that stays a constant height regardless if evaporation.

Here's some pics. Sorry had to get my QT tank up and running and just got around to posting. What are these "baffles" you speak of?! And ignore the rusty wire hanger holding up my basket, I'm adding a piece of plastic in its place tomorrow.

Ok, now I understand! Here is a picture of an Eshopps R-200 sump for an example:

Water enters on the left side, which is also the skimmer compartment. There are two baffles where water goes under, then through the second. This is just to keep bubbles from moving on to the next compartment. The second compartment is for the 'fuge, but again has the two baffles, this time over and then under, to maintain water level. This is basically what you want to do.

Here is a picture of my drains as the enter my sump:

I used reverse durso's which greatly reduces noise as it enters the sump.

I'm lost on the reverse durso? I thought that was in the corner drilled section of the DT? Sorry if I sound dumb, but I've gotten this far from youtube vids and Todd Sails threads on DIY. I don't have anyone local to come over and look at my setup. The baffles that split up the sections on that Eshopps is what I was referring to reducing the noise.
