I use the same test kit and you seem to doing /reading it right..

as stated above you would need to test your cal and mag.a high mag will allow you to keep a higher cal/alk in suspension,and you will need to keep cal up so it stays balanced and will not precip out..

I have done a bit of off site searching - I was trying to find the instructions for the kit your using so I could double check your method

Im not finding it but I am finding comments about the accuracy of said test kit on other sites

Ive also found a number of on line vendors have it listed as discontinued
some of the posts in other places I have read are from 2006

it seems you may have a less than reliable brand of test kit
so bearing that in mind, I would get your results checked at the LFS or if you know someone else with a different brand of test kit

if your looking for a recomendation on test kits for other parameters
I am a recent convert to Salifert kits for Calcium/ Magnesium and Alkalinity

How does 2 + 6 = 9 ??

 

because somebody went and put the 2 right next to the 3 on my keyboard

his 1st post had 3 original drops plus 6 - which equals 9

and I meant to type 3 + 6 = 9

I don't add anything to my tank that I can't test for. Also with your bio load once a month on the water changes is looking for trouble IMO. I do changes once a week.
Someone give Steve a shove I think his needle is stuck.JK
