Yes baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) will work but, it will very slightly decrease PH.
If you are having trouble keeping your PH up. ...go with Sodium Carbonate(baked baking soda) Sold in the laundry detergent section. Or just bake the baking soda. It will increase PH.

I've been using Kent Marine buffer myself it's pretty cheap and works well.

my pH is constant at 7.4 and i wanted to increase it to 8.0 at least. i added some baking soda and pH went down at the sump. shouldn't it raise the pH? but this morning pH went up to 7.6, is that normal? or is my tester broken? should i add more baking soda? if i need to bake it, how long and at what temperature, i only have a small toaster. thanks!

I'm not sure how people bake it. Sounds like more trouble than it's worth. I'd just get a box of sodium carbonate from the grocery store or online fish store. Sodium carbonate is in the laundry section at Kroger... also known as Soda ash:

baking soda is sodium Bicarbonate. Both are exceptable for raising dKh.
Try out the regular baking soda if you want and see what it does to your PH after 24 hours.

well not to get of base, my KH is way to high.. can just adding calicum help lower this?

oh and my PH never drops below 8.0, even without using buffer for long periods.. I try to keep it 8.2-8.3 though..

nitrates are high too.. if that matters..
