    I just set-up my lights 2 weeks ago. I bought the "Current USA - Outer Orbit" unit which comprises of the following:

    2 x 250w MH 10,000K PowerPaq HQI
    2 x 54w Actinic 460nm
    2 x 54w Actinic 420nm
    9 x Blue Lunar Lights
    9 x White Lunar Lights

    Being a new tank I presently have the MH running from 11am - 3pm.
    The actinics are on from 8am - 7pm.

    Seeing that the actinics are on for so long does this promote algae?
    Am I ok with the MH's being on for 4 hours or should I cut back.

    I know there is a procedure for gradually increasing lighting to the tank ... if anyone would care to chime in here I would appreciate it :) .

    No corals in the tank, tank's been running since April.14.2007, presently stocked with clown, coral beauty, sailfin & tomini tangs, 2 cleaner shrimp, 1 fire shrimp, and approx 30 turbo snails.

    Ammonia = 0
    Nitrites = 0
    Nitrates = 0
    pH = 8.2
    Salinity = 1.024

    I've gone through the brown algae phase already and it appears as if the green algae may be starting as I see one or two pieces of the LR turning green.

    Thanks in advance.

    Actinics should promote coralline algae but unless your bulbs are old, they shouldn't cause any problems with nuisance algae. If you don't have any corals in your tank, I wouldn't even bother running the MH. We run our VHO actinics on for 16-17 hours.

    Microalgae is more often than not associated with the other end of the light spectrum! Bulbs with a high level of red/orange color in them will aid in the growth of micro, more so than the other end of the spectrum.

    i have a crappy odysea power compact I wish I was good with electic wiring so I could wire up a way to just run my actinics like the coralife PC does.

    In the mean time you could always purchase a strip light that runs just an actinic! Just a suggestion...that is what I do right now so I can view my zoos at night under just the Actinics!
