I just got a lil' clown goby so I did some reading about them and this is my basic understanding: they do not need coral, though they do prefer it. Also, if you don't have coral for them then they need to be fed mutliple times per day.

    need coral for what?

If you're talking about the citrinis, brown, yellow and green gobies occasionally eating and laying eggs on Acros, it's a gamble but a very small one. My citrinis has never nipped or nested on any of my Acros and other SPS's.

A safe bet would be to get a tank bred goby. There's a much better chance that you'll be able to get it to eat food instead of corals.

I don't have coral and my little guy eats just fine. I think he just misses perching around on the coral branches, because that's what they love. But I feed twice a day, and he is a hungry boy!!

So far he's eating mysis shrimp and brine shrimp with spirulina. I'm hoping to vary his diet in the future to include pellets/flakes and I've read they like chopped up table shrimp and other meaty food for carnivores.

This might be a really stupid question, but how do you feed it to him ? do you just drop some food into the tank ? (lol)
