Stupid question here. I am new to marine. I would like to know if "some" corals do multiply on it own to the point when you can cut them and plant it in another rock or aquarium? (just like plants in freshwater)

    Thanks

what you describe above is called fragging, which means cutting a coral and transplanting it elsewhere

some corals are easy to frag (GSP, Zoanthds ,Softies like Leathers and Toadstools etc)
some corals are more difficult and best left to advanced reef keepers (LPS)

some corals can be encouraged to self propogate or split , they grow over adjascent rock and then rock can be broken away and moved elsewhere

some corals can be cut, and secured to a new rock

the method depends on species really
some corals like GSP, Anthellia etc will just encrust over neighbouring surfaces and could cover your whole tank eventually if you let them.

Yes, all corals do grow if they are healthy. The "Cutting and planting" in another part of the tank is called fragging a coral. It is a very popular and good idea and if done right can help spread corals around tanks and to other tanks, and can help to save reefs. It may also make you some money or credit at the LFS if you bring them frags. There are many articles about fragging around 3reef and in other places, and no, not a dumb question.

Yup, probably the best thing they do ... helps us leave many in the ocean, and grow our own ... referred to as "aquaculture"

hopefully one day we'll have a self sustaining hobby ... where there are no more wild specimens

I think that sps Acropora are the most easy to cultivate as you just cut/break off a branch and it will grow
