If so, how are recent events affecting those folks?

I have read a couple of accounts now, on other places
of reef keepers who have had to leave their tanks behind and exit the country

I dont know the extent of the hobby there
I do know that in most peoples minds , their aquariums would not be the 1st priority in that situation

I definately agree that it would not be my first priority either. I sure wouldn't be happy about having to ditch it though.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
    Yes they do.

Unfortunately my good friend contacted the day before the first demonstration (the big one). He told me they would probably cut off the internet, his blackberry was already down.

He has the most amazing 75 gal that he built from scratch and I mean scratch.

I have not heard from him or his family since that day.

Mo my thoughts are with you, I hope you are safe.

I imagine they basically have left their aquariums and will return to them if they're Egyptian, and the non-Egyptians that were living in the country may never see them again.

As for the worldwide impact, Red Sea overnight shipments (most of the Middle East) were mostly already stopped because of the bomb scares from Yemen a couple months ago. Some countries had been allowed to ship to the US again from what I understand, although some were still closed off (Yemen was still not shipping, for sure). Egypt is likely not going to be shipping for a period of time, leaving the world with one less place to get their purple tangs, sohals, and others.

But that's minor compared to what the people there are going through.

We may all find out for ourselves what happens when our government falls apart.

when people are getting run over by the secret police and hit by molotov cocktails, fish tend to go down the priority list.

They have internet access again now.

Likely because the government is using it to start anti protest groups (the latest are FB groups that say not to go to the large protests planned Friday) and quell this revolution, but they do have net access.
