do i keep my filter/ protein skimmer running during cycling?

Could you post some specs about your tank and equipment?

 

i have a 40 gallon tank. 45 pounds of cured live rock ( it was in a different tank a few weeks ago) at least 20 pound of live sand. 2 heaters( they are too small for the tank with just one). a marine land penguin 200 bio wheel. a red sea prizm protein skimmer. i use instant ocean salt mix. thats basically it.

 

IMO, one filter pad is fine. If you want more biofiltration and there is room, you can add LR.
