I was just wondering if I really need a filter or not on my 55 gallon reef tank with fish I have a 100 gallon protein skimmer and 2 powerheads 1 is 1400gph and the other is a 240 gph and I have a hob filter that I don't really want

What purpose would the filter serve? I use my hob in a similar setup with bio pellets. You could run carbon in it as well. Its a decision you get to make, but no, its not necessary

It would be a convenient way to run chemical filtration if you don't have a sump and/or media reactor, but definitely not necessary.

IMO lots of biological filtration and lots of flow will get you farther than any filter in any aquarium. That protein skimmer will be good though.
