I can't decide if I need a skimmer for my 5.5 gallon. I'm planning on keeping zoas, mushrooms and LPS. I have an AC30 and live rock. Do y'all think I need a protein skimmer? If so what kind?

personally i would say no. A tank of that size should be able to easily maintained with only water changes.

Also, a little GAC in your HOB will do the same job.

+2, a skimmer won't work with that small of a volume of water. It's more likely to empty your entire tank on the floor than remove any organics. As mentioned, GAC does more or less the same thing and also it is more effective anyways; the trade off being it gets expensive on larger tanks, so on larger tanks, it makes sense to add a skimmer to reduce cost.
