Hello, so I just got into saltwater a couple months ago, have a 55 gal with 2 hob filters and live rock and 2 chromis, I wanted to get a hob protein skimmer, most likely a remora but would I need to keep one of the filters on or can I just run my tank strictly on a skimmer? Thanks

I think that the filters will help with mechanical filtration and also you can add carbon. Will help also with additional flow. If there is space on the back leave the filters. Don't forget to clean them frequently.

    Huh?

You should have the protein skimmer and a mechanical filter also.

    Also, the bigger the better.

You'll save lots of $$$ if you make your own replacement filters instead of buying the factory replacement filters.
The price will add up quick in a salt water tank and that alone can often be a maintenance deturrent.

Having all the bulk supplies at home to make a fresh filter for 10 cents will make you more likely to quickly clean the filter.

You can get small thin filter socks and put in the media you need like carbon or gfo if you get a LARGE enough filter.

There is no set way to do filtration on a tank. You could find that just the skimmer may be enough. It would not hurt to try.

On my 46 bow, I run a HOB skimmer, Phosban 150 reactor for carbon, and a air pump driven sponge filter. I do have a good amount of live rock and a slew of snails and a couple hermits. Tank stays very clean, and almost no algae.

Ya I already make my own filters for the hob ones I have now, maybe ill use one of them and a protein skimmer because one of mine is way too noisy and obnoxious
